HISTORY In 1997, the World Health Organization's Global Program on Vaccines and Immunization (WHO/GPV) identified the need for the development of needle-free injection devices for vaccination. WHO/GPV requested the creation of an Association, or Steering Group, within the Needle-Free Injection Industry which would permit industry members proper and formal representation. At that time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had begun focusing greater attention on needle-free injection devices, and thought it unlikely that the "510(k)" process for clearing devices would "persist forever".

On May 21, 1997, industry members met and recognized the need to take charge of their own destiny, agreeing to work together to help define future needle-free injection standards. At this inaugural meeting, ANFIM (Association of Needle-Free Injection Manufacturers) was born.

Since 1998, ANFIM representatives have worked internationally to increase exposure and knowledge of needle-free injection technology throughout the healthcare industry. ANFIM attends Management Forum Conferences on Needle-Free and Autoinjectors held annually in London. ANFIM has presented at Safe Injection Global Network (SIGN) meetings, an organization whose goals include providing safe injections throughout the world. ANFIM's presence continues to be felt at related industry conferences and meetings across the globe.
